urban tactics + media ecologies

a workshop at strelka in moscow July 13th to 21st

Day 2: Mapping Krasny Oktyabr

Yesterday, the group was challenged to consider the media ecology of the Red October district. In three groups we visited several different restaurants and establishments that populate the district to gain insight into the food culture of this famous district.

At each site we too photos and conducted interviews looking to capture a sense of the accessibility of food to the island. Each visit and interview are annotated to the map posted here.

Through our reports to each other we came to two observations: a) that the organization of food establishments is limited and that b) the Red October redevelopment follows a pattern of gentrification where property value is aggressively pursued by changing the perception of a piece of real estate – the image of a vibrant arts and culture district adds value to the location.
